Continue west from Natural Bridges on Hwy 95 and in another 30 miles or so the scenery gets more and more rugged and beautiful. Here’s the bridge crossing the Colorado River just before it flows into the top end of Lake Powell…………..
A little farther along, you’ll come to the Dirty Devil River with Lake Powell in the distance. This is some distance before reaching the bridge…………….
Standing on a rock outcrop to take the above picture, I turned around and took a quick one of the Diesel Dodge and Dustbuster……………..
Farther on around and just before starting the stiff climb onto the bluffs, here’s a look back at the Hwy 95 bridge over the Dirty Devil River……………..
On the top of the bluff is a great viewpoint that lets you see for miles. It’s several 100 feet up……….once again, watch your step. Dirty Devil comes in at left, Colorado River in high center……………..
This’ll give you an idea of just how high up we are. I’d guess about 500 feet. Just at the lower right side, it drops off sheer………………
Now, a few more miles of these wild colors and textures till you come to the Hwy 276 turnoff that leads to Bullfrog Basin (remember the boat ride a month or so ago ??) and on over the ridge toward Hanksville. The country changes drastically, textures and colors are totally different. This is a few miles west of Hanksville on the way to Capitol Reef National Park………….
A few more miles. The road will give an idea of scale. This is Big Country……………..
Then, in the distance, another abrupt change in texture and color - Capitol Reef National Park………………
I spent the night in a gulch just outside of Torrey, Utah and went the 10 miles back into Capitol Reef the next morning. Lar.
